13 hits that marked 2023
The songs that really made an impact on the charts, that made millions of hearts vibrate all over the planet.
2023 is a great year for Pop. The stars have given us some of their biggest (and sometimes best) hits to date. Hip-hop no longer dominates the Billboard Hot 100 as it did in the late 2010s and early 2020s. No number 1 in rap until September! There was more room for genres like pop-rock, country and R&B. Latin pop and K-pop hitmakers have had a major impact.
Here is our selection of the 17 songs that left their mark on 2023 and for a very long time to come:
1 - Taylor Swift
"Is It Over Now?
No. 1 on the Hot 100, this song was the icing on the cake of a record year for Swift.
2 - Dave & Central Cee
"Sprinter
It's just two of the UK's biggest MCs passing the mic to each other over an elastic UK Drill beat with Latin guitar tones.
3 - Bad Bunny
"Monaco
An introduction with the strings of Charles Aznavour's "Hier Encore". Then a Latin Trap track dripping with billionaire arrogance.
4 - Rema & Selena Gomez
"Calm Down
The Nigerian artist further underlines the growing popularity of Afrobeats among the general public.
5 - Billie Eilish
"What Was I Made For? (Barbie OST)
Billie Eilish and her brother-collaborator Finneas delve into the world of Barbie to find a moving piano ballad.
6 - Miley Cyrus
"Flowers
She buys herself flowers and proves that self-love is the greatest love of all. The incredibly catchy "Flowers", with its rhythmic chorus. Launched at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the track spends eight weeks there.
7 - Morgan Wallen
"Last Night
No. 1 country star on the Billboard Hot 100, but spent 16 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1.
8 - Jimin
"Like Crazy
The K-Pop phenomenon is still something that was mainly associated in the general public with groups, until Jimin (ex BTS) exploded in the charts.
9 - Skrillex, Fred again... & Flowdan
"Rumble
A titanic piece, with an ominous click that suggests the imminent arrival of something huge and perhaps a little terrifying.
10 - Dua Lipa
"Dance the Night
Commissioned for the Barbie film, Dua Lipa's new Disco opus is a bit all over the place, but still very catchy.
11 - Labrinth
"Never Felt So Alone
Stunning, dreamlike and poignant, this gentle electro-pop ballad features moments of whispered thought and a refreshing vocoder voice.
12 - Lana Del Rey
"A&W
Enigmatic singer-songwriter and collaborator Jack Antonoff has done nothing less than deliver one of the best songs of each of their careers. A seven-minute epic, it's short for "American Whore".
13 - SZA
"Kill Bill
Like a tribute to Quentin Tarantino's two films about an aggrieved lover who takes revenge on his ex. The eerie synth loops, combined with groovy boom bap-inspired percussion No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with 21 weeks, and garnered three nominations ahead of the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Throughout 2023, Pop was in the spotlight. Female artists are increasingly creative. There is also a growing integration of niche cultures into Pop music.
